My fellow friends, readers, interested…
A great cheers from Argentina’s plain, infinite lands. A land gone dry in the last years. The locals say it’s raining less and less. And I… accustomed to Buenos Aires´ humidity, didn’t know this drought, and my hands have cracks like the ground, because my skin can feel it. And I can not stop myself from thinking how the body is a clear ecosystem example. Given external forces applied to the ecosystem, it changes in order to adapt. Given the dry weather, my hands, elbows, feet and abs are dry. It’s the natural way to react. Likewise, our planet self regulates, and the changes that are emerging should be of our interest. Because we are the self-conscious living species capable of standing in defense of the planet through so much unbalance.
“For we are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self-awareness. We have begun to contemplate our origins: starstuff pondering the stars; organized assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing the long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.” – Carl Sagan
In fact, to be more specific, in Argentina, according to the National Environmental Ministry, 112 million hectares of the 280 million that cover the entire country (this is the 40% of the country’s land) are affected in some degree by degradation processes. (Info extracted from an article of www.tuverde.com in reference to july the seventh – the Day of Soil Conservation). Moreover, in the last century, Argentina has lost 70% of its native forests. That’s a hell of a lot my friends. Even more, we only have 7% of our territory protected. (the article from where I took this info is really EXCELENT regarding the issue of forests)
Lucky for us, our generation is starting to urge for some change. An example of this are the projects presented at the 2000 Environment Contest, focused on making alternatives to go towards sustainable cities in Latin America. The projects show how the solutions to our planetary problems come from integrating knowledge from different branches of science. This link shows the newspaper article
Another good one is that a new Ecology magazine came out in Argentina, which is for free and goes out once every two months. It has cool and interesting information.
Speaking about recycling again –You can find more information in the recycling solution we present in this web page- I wanted to give you another link of an agrupation of people who wish to stop waiting for “someone to do something”. With that will, they intend to create education in responsible consumption and in the indoors classification of rubbish. In order to do so, this web page presents good information about recycling as well ass several addresses in Argentina to recycle electronics, keys, paper, bags, etc. The agrupation is called “Padua Recicla“
My dearest… I salute you with the usual strength, and I wish you the best, and take some time in the week, if possible, to read about these issues, it’s our prime responsibility if we want to achieve greatness in our human potential.
Greetings!
