For this week, a few words on a video I share with you at the end of this article: “All work and plat”[1]. – A video that helps us feel part of the generation of change. Sometimes you may think that your way of thinking is isolated, or that your little grain of sand makes no difference at all. The truth is, it does.
This video summarizes the economic, social and cultural reality of the last 3 generations.
- The “baby boomers” (60´s & 70´s): where clockworks jobs still prevailed. Jobs with no meaning at all, just having a family, holidays, a car, a house. What the social contract promised in exchange of a life dedicated to routine. A generation that took natural resources for granted, as something naturally never ending and coincided with the beginning of the human demographic explosion.
- The generation “X” (80´s & 90´s): this generation already absorbed corporate life and transmutated it into competition… a competition for everything, for salaries, for status, diplomas, labels, profit and reward.
- The actual human generation, which is defines as the young “millenians” (00´s & 10´s): a generation where time is driven by pleasure, which determines professional accomplishments. The video informs that they represent a new work force in the global market (2.3 billon) and have high aspirations. Half of them own or are planning to have their own business. They have a digital, liquid and collective mind set. A generation which was born playing in the streets and riding a bike, and grew up with internet in their adolescence.
The key question is: Are you doing what you love right now?
I always read this quote when I need to think about it, a quote I share often with you:
“You must always keep in mind that a path is only a path. Each path is only one of a million paths. If you feel that you must not follow it, you must not stay in it under any circumstances.
Any path is only a path. There is no affront to yourself or others in dropping a path if that is what your heart tells you to do.
But your decision to keep on following a path or to leave it must be free of fear and ambition. I caution you: look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary.
Then ask yourself and yourself alone this one question. Does this path have a heart?
All paths are the same. They lead nowhere. They are paths going through the brush or into the brush or under the brush of the Universe. The only question is: Does this path have a heart? If it does, then it is a good path. If it doesn‟t, then it is of no use.
There is no path leading you nowhere, but one has heart and the other one has not. One makes your trip joyful; as longs as you follow it, you are One with it. The other one, will make you curse your life.
One makes you strong; the other one weakens you“[2]
We are the generation of change; we just need to acknowledge it.
Today I only wanted to say that. A friend of mine said it simply, “a lot of people exist like you and have that spark in their souls that makes you think that nothing is impossible.”
If you cannot see the video, you can watch it here.
Until next week,
Brian Longstaff.-
